Typographic Self Portrait
Typographic Self Portrait
The goal of this project was to create a self-portrait only using typographic characters. The first step was to take a black-and-white image to see the highlights and shadows across the face to be easier to define through letterforms.
I chose two typefaces that had multiple weights, making it easier to create the light and dark areas. The typefaces were Avenir Next and Minion Variable Concept. Using the letterforms I layered them over each other to create the shading, similar to the crosshatching technique of repeated layers to create the darker areas.
In the beginning stages of design, I started with bigger letterforms to take up the space. Throughout the process, I found using smaller letters made the composition cohesive and detailed.
